I was raised in a movement. I grew up in the midst of United Farm Workers marches and the community activism of working people. I believe in, and live by, the words of Coretta Scott King- “struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won; you earn it and win it in every generation.” That is why I support the Black Lives Matter movement and why I believe that we, as a country, need to take a hard look in the mirror on the history and present status of race and class in our country. We need to take a stand against the prison-industrial complex and the school-to-prison pipeline, which have devastated so many communities of color. We need to fight against private prisons. We need to work across the aisle and pass bipartisan criminal justice reform to reduce mandatory minimums. And we must fight tooth and nail against the systematic disenfranchisement of Black and Latino communities and the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act.
