The 34th district is the epicenter of our homelessness crisis. The web of societal failings that create and grow homelessness has been ignored for far too long. Homelessness is a result of crises in housing affordability, lack of accessible mental health and addiction services, and inadequacies of the criminal justice system. In order to address the many factors growing our homeless population, we need all hands on deck- local, state and federal. For the past five years, I have helped house individuals in my community and worked with various agencies to improve service delivery and meet individuals experiencing homelessness where they are at. I have helped create homelessness intervention programs, including C3 (City, County and Community,) which have gotten chronically homeless individuals off the streets and into housing. In Congress, I will continue to support work that improves system delivery and services for those who need it the most. I will protect the funding of the Interagency Council on Homelessness so we can continue to move forward with a federal plan to stop people from living and dying on our streets. I will push to direct more HUD dollars towards our region to ensure that we are building the housing needed to get people off our streets. I will fight to protect the essential health benefits currently afforded to many under the ACA that provide funding for addiction treatment and mental health services for many people experiencing homelessness.
