I’m running for Congress because I believe in Los Angeles, from the progressive values we share, to the diversity we celebrate. Today, our communities are under attack in Washington DC, and I’m ready to stand-up on behalf of the 34th District to protect the Los Angeles we all love.
We need fighters in DC right now. I am the daughter of civil rights lawyers who fought for the rights of farm workers in the fields of Salinas. They instilled in me a deep commitment to equality and the American Dream, and a conviction that justice is always worth fighting for. But just fighting isn’t enough. We need leaders who understand how policy plays out on the ground. As a former middle school teacher, I experienced how every issue we deal with as a society plays out in the classroom. The educational outcomes of students and their families depend on adequate affordable housing, access to healthcare, criminal justice reform and immigration policies that protect Dreamers and prevent mass deportations. Any teacher will tell you, some of the most well intentioned policies, do not function how we want them to on the ground. I understand that disconnect, have experienced it firsthand and can apply that knowledge to policy making that works. We also deserve representatives who know how to deliver results for our communities. This has always been essential to my work. As a teacher, I founded a nonprofit that provides exceptional educational opportunities to low-income students across Los Angeles, because I personally wanted to deliver on the dreams of my students and their families. As Special Counsel to Councilmember Jose Huizar, I worked with countless small businesses to open their doors and revitalize our streets. I’m not part of any established political machine. My passion and work has always been directed toward getting things done for children, working families, local small businesses, and the most vulnerable among us. I’m proud that my story isn’t just one of advocacy; it’s one of results. In Congress, I’ll fight for our communities and the critical issues that impact us all. I will work to defend immigrants and their families, protect public school funding, safeguard our environment, and secure our parents’ retirement and healthcare. This is a pivotal moment for our District and our country. We need to invest in the next generation of leadership. The fight ahead won’t be easy, but I promise never to back down. -Sara |
